Ma'n H. Zawati is a lawyer and a Professional Associate at the Centre of Genomics and Policy at McGill University. Before joining the Centre, he completed his articling at Ménard, Martin, Avocats, s.e.n.c., a Montreal-based law firm specialized in medical and hospital liability as well as in legal psychiatry. Mr. Zawati coordinates the ELSI and Privacy Task Force of the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project, a pan-Canadian research study of 300,000 Canadians that explores how genetics, environment, lifestyle and behaviour contribute to the development of cancer and other chronic diseases. Ma’n H. Zawati also manages the HumGen International Project as well as the PopGen Module, an international database on the legal and socio-ethical aspects of Population Genetics. In 2010, Mr. Zawati was awarded the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship of the European Commission. Starting Fall 2010, he will be a Visiting Scholar at the Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven, Belgium. His work focuses on the legal and ethical aspects of population genomics and on the duties of health professionals in medical research. He is currently a legal representative in the research ethics committees of Montreal's General Hospital, the Sir Mortimer B. Davis - Jewish General Hospital and the Montreal Chest Institute. Mr. Zawati is currently completing a Masters Degree (LL.M.) at the Université de Montréal's Faculty of Law |
